SkunkModels Workshop (#SW-48010)
SkunkModels HH-60J Jayhawk is a re-boxing of Italeri's kit of the same name which shares many parts with their whole H-60 1/48 scale series including both Seahawks and Blackhawks. In re-boxing SkunkModels also includes two photo-etch frets two new styrene sprues one coloured and one clear. SkunkModels also included their own decal sheet.
Before I purchased this kit I had read some reviews that stated while having a sparse interior it was otherwise an excellent kit. Unfortunately these also happened to be inbox reviews, and to be fair from an inbox point of view this would seem to be accurate. On building this kit though and in looking for references to help detail out the cabin I found a few more reviews that would back up my later thoughts that this kit is not for the faint of heart or easily discouraged.
ln researching information to assist in scratch building some of missing detail I discovered most of what detail is provided is wrong most notably
- Cabin length too long.
- Provided crew seats for both cabin and cockpit were incorrect.
While internally the cabin may require attention to obtain a decent level of quality, externally a lot more effort is required to make the kit presentable. This involved much filler (both putty and superglue) and sanding on the main body seams. Careful alignment is required for the cockpit roof section to allow for minimal sanding and a poor fitting windscreen which requires sanding and superglue filler for a good pit.
If there is a saving grace to this kit (and there is), it is the decals. SkunkModels supplied their own instead of using Italeri's and they are prefect to work with. Printed with excellent colour that loosea none of it's own clarity when applied over the bright paint work. The decals apply easily and settle down perfectly often requiring no setting solution.
Due to problems with the external quality of this kit I could only recommend this kit to someone of at least average experience.
